And so with this painting, I altered details from my reference and worked with impressions. While it's based on a real place, you can see from the difference between my block in and the finished piece that I've worked to achieve an effect, an impression, not to illustrate a fact.
Throughout this project, I will very likely refrain from sharing my memories and impressions: I make these paintings so that you'll feel them on your own - without me telling you what to think or feel.
The first piece is my block-in. This is how I start most paintings; even my plein air work. I use transparent red oxide enhanced with ultramarine or raw umber. I almost always work on an imprimatura of transparent yellow oxide.
This site is both the chronicle of my recent sabbatical - the theme of which was "a sense of place" and my ongoing work in life after sabbatical. I try to share thoughts and insights about my work and the practice of painting that others will find useful and applicable to their own work. I hope you enjoy your visit!
